New Beginnings

Dear Spiders Family,

We find ourselves at the end of another semester, and the end of four years for three Spiders, including myself. As we graduate, we are very thankful to Jono for giving us the opportunity to learn, grow, and find a close circle of friends within the Spiders and Online Platforms teams. Although we are sad to go, we know that we are joining a strong alumni network and Spiders will continue to do great things.

Last week we held the senior farewell potluck which saw the best of the teams’ home cooking skills on display. Aside from the tasty food, the graduates received their Spiders diplomas and gifted Jono customized M&M’s with his face on them! You can check out the highlights in the gallery below.

Senior Profile: Paige Kelly

Major?
Magazine journalism, with minors in policy studies and sociology

Hometown?
Syracuse, NY

What makes you the happiest?
I’m happiest when I’m doing work I’m passionate about, in nature, or with my friends and family.

How’d you become a Spider?
I applied the summer before my sophomore year. I got a rejection letter by accident, but then Jono emailed me for an interview!

What are your plans after graduation?
I am not sure of my plans right now, but I hope to work in public affairs, either a non-profit, think tank, government, or campaign.

What’s one thing you’ve learned from working at Spiders that you think will help you in the future?
Spiders taught computer skills that I have used in all my internships and that I know I will use in the future. The experience here is so relevant to many careers—one of the reasons why Spiders is so great!

Senior Profile: Kirsty Fraser

Major?
Magazine journalism with minors in psychology and information management and technology

Hometown?
Dundee, Scotland

Where was your favorite place you’ve ever lived?
Albania. Great food, beaches, and people.

Why’d you decide to come to ‘Cuse?
I came here for Newhouse and its journalism program, but I also wanted to live on the East Coast.

How did you end up a Spider?
I applied the summer before sophomore year and Spiders was the only place that would hire international students. My resume was three pages long, but Jono took a chance on me (most likely because I’m Scottish)!

What is your favorite memory as a Spider?
Chatting with Beth and Paige in the content publisher cube!

Senior Profile: Katie Canete

Major?
Bandier Program for Music and the Entertainment Industries (B.S.) with minors in Management Studies and Music Performance

Hometown?
New Providence, NJ

If you could only listen to one music artist for the rest of your days, who would it be?
The Reign of Kindo (If you haven’t heard of them, check them out!)

How’d you become a part of the Spiders team?
Former Spider Will Skalmoski reached out to me before his semester abroad asking if I’d be interested in a job. I hadn’t heard of Spiders or the Office of Marketing and Communications prior to this. The intent was that if I was hired, I’d perform his job while he was in London. After my interview, it was determined I’d actually be a better fit to eventually take on the role of Spiders Coordinator after the current Coordinator Claire Alex graduated. I joined the team as a freshman and they haven’t been able to get rid of me since.

What was your favorite part about working here?
Besides potlucks, I enjoyed getting to know people I likely would not have interacted with otherwise. On a bigger campus, it can be challenging to meet people outside of your dorm or your classes. But Spiders allows you to meet and collaborate with people outside of your major and year.

Do you have any advice for current and/or future Spiders?
Current Spiders: Be mindful of your time. Taking on a part-time job on top of classes and extracurriculars can be a lot to handle at once. Stay organized with your schedule, but be sure to make some time for fun. College can be competitive with everyone trying to be “the best” and the most successful. But remember, it’s important for your social well-being and sanity to spend time with friends. It’s worth staying up late to finish your work after spending cherished time with your pals.

Future Spiders: Learn as much as you can. Take advantage of your time at Spiders to improve your skills and learn new ones. Ask questions. Foster conversations. Don’t be shy. This job requires more than just arriving, sitting at your desk, and leaving. Have fun and enjoy every moment!

There’s Snow Place Like Spiders

Dear Spiders Family,

Happy 2018! As we head into another busy semester in typical Syracuse temperatures, we see three Spiders prepare to graduate and two currently abroad in Australia and Denmark. We are excited to see what they accomplish!

Before we left for break, we hosted a potluck where Spiders presented their resumes and cover letters in preparation for their job search. Check out the potluck gallery for the highlights!

A Spooktacular Day

Dear Spiders Family,

Happy Friday the 13th, AKA the unluckiest day of the year! While Spiders are not too superstitious, we can’t believe it’s already October (where has the time gone?). As Spiders do, we are busy getting into the spooky spirit as Halloween approaches!

Spiders have been busy at work, too. We started this semester with two new additions to the Spiders team and we finally have a LinkedIn account – feel free to follow it!

Halloween 2016 Potluck: A Spooktacular Event

On Friday, October 21st, Spiders and Online Platforms took a much-needed break from the heavy rain and midterms with a Halloween-themed potluck and a Skype chat with Spiders alumna Chelsea Lorenz ‘14.

The potluck was nothing short of spook-tacular and featured a great selection of entrées and desserts, including Katie Canete’s dirt and worms (crushed oreos and pudding), Paige Kelly’s jack o’ lantern empanadas, and Kirsty Fraser’s hot dog mummies. Despite the competition, Jeremy Dennen was a clear winner with his scary spicy chili! Continue Reading

Changes with the Fall

Dear Spiders Family,

And we’re back! Just like that, we’ve got another year of Spiders in full swing. The fall season has brought plenty of changes: we have seven new Spiders, ten seniors preparing for graduation, and two Spiders abroad. And to top it all off, we’re introducing new Spiders branding! I’m in Los Angeles for the semester, and in my absence, we are fortunate to have fellow Spider Kirsty Fraser picking up the slack!
