Learning, Achieving, and Giving Back
Spiders was set up to give back to the SU Community. We created a fun learning environment by utilizing the talents of SU students, in hopes that they would learn new skills, apply those skills, and contribute to our creative projects. Spiders is made up of a group of students who report to the Online Platforms team within SU’s Office of Marketing and Communications.
Working at Spiders provides students with opportunities to expand their education outside of coursework. As students accomplish projects that further the work of the University, they learn how to meet professional standards in a meaningful way. Additionally, students report to experienced full-time staff members who encourage them to learn and achieve. We currently have between 20-30 Spiders who do Web Development, Graphic Design, Accessibility Website Review and Reporting, Content Publishing, and Web App Development.
By employing its own students, Syracuse University is able to harness new ideas and up-and-coming talent. In this dynamic, Spiders serve their University. In exchange for experience and monetary compensation, Spiders commit to supporting the marketing endeavors of their school. Spiders get paid, learn new relevant skills, and make valuable contributions to OP’s productivity, all while providing SU with great creative output.
The Spiders model has proven to be enormously successful since its formation in 2010. Spider work has advanced the development of countless websites, publications, and special projects at Syracuse University. Past and present Spiders have benefitted from increased employability, with many alumni becoming accomplished members of their chosen industry. The Expressions, Collage, and Answers platforms were developed by Spiders, with OP supervision. Spiders also developed The OrangeTV website(s) and the iAdvocate App (SU Faculty member’s teaching App). For more information about the projects Spiders work on, visit What We Do.
